Exploring the Harmful Effects of Environmental Pollutants
The ExpoSignalz project will investigate the effects of chemical pollutants on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease.
ExpoSignalz is a five-year research project funded by Horizon Europe.
It aims to uncover how specific chemical pollutants, such as persistent organic pollutants, electronic waste, and pharmaceutical residues, affect brain ageing and contribute to the development of dementia, a leading cause of death worldwide. Researchers will examine the impacts of exposure at different stages of life, with a particular focus on the underlying biological mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to support early diagnosis and develop preventive strategies, particularly for Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for approximately 70% of all dementia cases.
The project is addressing a major global health challenge: the increasing prevalence of dementia. In 2020, more than 55 million people worldwide were living with dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease responsible for 60-70% of these cases. This number is expected to nearly double every 20 years, potentially reaching 139 million by 2050. Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is also the seventh leading cause of death globally.
