University of Bordeaux

France, Partner

The Bordeaux Population Health Research Centre (BPH) is a world-leading laboratory for epidemiology and public health research in France.

It comprises over 500 members across 10 complementary teams that conduct research in various fields of public health. BPH is a research unit of Inserm (U129) and the University of Bordeaux.

A substantial portion of the centre’s research is dedicated to discovering etiological factors underlying disease, ranging from social determinants and the exposome (environmental exposures, nutrition, lifestyle) to genetic susceptibility factors. BPH holds a unique position in France due to its distinctive areas of excellence in historical topics, with brain and mental health being the leading domains.

Cécilia is a Research Director at Inserm and a leading expert in brain ageing epidemiology. A veterinarian by training, she earned a PhD in Public Health in 2009 and completed a postdoc at Harvard School of Public Health. Her work at BPH —a top French public health lab—focuses on how environmental exposures (the exposome) affect brain ageing and dementia risk. Cécilia is leading research objective #2.

BPH hosts over 500 researchers and is a leader in brain and mental health research, integrating social, environmental, and genetic determinants of disease. Using large cohort studies and molecular epidemiology, Cécilia investigates exposome factors influencing brain ageing and related diseases. In 2021, she launched the B cube study (promoted by Bordeaux University Hospital) to identify early prevention strategies against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
